Otters Masters Competition News 2004

Masters Award Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the 2004 achievers' award:

Mary Tasker and Dave Carkett.

Wilts Masters Sprints

The Wiltshire masters competition is held over three galas throughout the year, and covers 25m, 50m, and 100m of each stroke. This year the Otters were thwarted by sickness and holiday clashes in the run up to these galas, but we still managed a total of 12 competition points and 7 medals, despite only fielding 3 swimmers at 2 out of the 3 galas. Congratulations to all who took part!

Results:

Mark Hopkins:              2nd (100m fly), 3rd (50m back, 100m free), 5th (25m breast)

Ann Lees:                       2nd (100m breaststroke)

Kirsty Lees:                    3rd (100m free), 4th (50m backstroke)

Phil Musgrave:              5th (100m fly, 25m breast) 7th (100m free)

Robin Snell:                   1st (25m free), 2nd (50m fly)

Helen White:                  4th (100m back, 50m fly) 6th (100m breast), 7th (25m free)

Particular congratulations to Robin Snell, who very narrowly missed out on a county record in the 25m freestyle (there’s always next year Robin... ;o) ).

Full results and fixtures for 2005 can be found at www.wiltsmasters.org,uk.

These events are for all ages from the 19-24 (“pre-masters”) age group right through to 80 or older! The focus really is on enjoyable competition, so even if you are not sure about competing individually, everyone is welcome to come along and sprint a length as part of a club relay team. You never know, you may enjoy the experience and want to go it alone the next time!

Wilts Masters Open Water 2004

On a rainy Sunday in June, three intrepid Otters set out to compete in the Wiltshire Masters 1 mile open water competition at Keynes Park. This is a relatively new competition, held in conjunction with the BLDSA (British Long Distance Swimming Association), who were holding their championships on the same day and were kind enough to officiate for us. The turnout was disappointingly low, but a good race was swum and the Otters made off with the trophies. (Perhaps the Otter skin is more suited to these conditions than that of Dolphins or Penguins…)

Results:

Phil Musgrave:              1st overall, 1st male over 40

Kirsty Lees:                    2nd overall, 1st female under 40

Helen White:                 4th overall, 1st female over 40

We are in danger of losing this event due to low entries so we would like to encourage anyone interested to participate in 2005. The event is friendly, and ideal for anyone not too keen on sprinting who would like to try a different type of swimming (even better if it’s sunny!).

 Wilts Masters 1500m, October 2004

Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to low entries in 2004, doubly unfortunate for us because Wootton Bassett had entered more swimmers than any other club. Whether this event will be held in 2005 will depend on the number of swimmers interested.

Club Gala, October – November 2004

A few masters took part in the club gala this year. Full results are available in the “Galas and Results” section of the website. A total of 13 new masters records were set (Mark Hopkins 5, Phil Musgrave 4 and Kirsty Lees 4).

The Otters have recently started up a new session for their adult swimmers as their Sunday morning session is now full.  The new session is on every Saturday at the Lime Kiln Centre, starting at 7.15a.m until 8.15a.m.  To join us you need to be over 25 and able to swim a few lengths.  We follow a schedule but everyone is expected to swim within their own ability.  We also welcome 19-25 year olds but only if they don’t swim too fast!  If you would like to join us, now is the time, while everyone is comparatively new and everyone can improve together.  Your first swim is free and then £10 a month payable to the Otters.

To join us, turn up any Saturday morning, or for more details please contact
Helen White via e-mail
