Description
Main Aims
Club Section
1
Develop basic safety awareness.
Basic movement skills and water confidence skills.  Swimming aids include Arm bands, floats and the usesof toys.

2
Develop safe entries in to the water.
This includes jumping in, basic floating, rotation and travel.  All activities us without floating aids. Also introducing stream lining and push and glide.

3
Develop safe entries in to the water including submersion.
Improving from stage 3, progressing to submersion and travelling up to 10 meters on front and back. Rotation skills and water safety knowledge.

Develop the understanding of bouyancy.
Understanding buoyancy through skills, improving kick technics for all strokes and swimming 10  meters to a given standard.

Develop ‘watermanship’
Sculling, treading water, completing rotation skills and performing all strokes to a given standard as directed by the ASA.

Develop effective swimming skills
Including coordinated breathing, understanding the need for preparation for exercise. Developing water safety aspects.

Develop quality stroke technique.
Combining all skills learnt, successfully completing an obstacle course that involves a variety of skills, from stages 1-6

Competitive Swimming
These stages involve swimming longer distances form 25 to 800 meters, continuing to work on stroke technic and maintaining it for a set distance. Use of the timing clock, competitive starts, obeying lane discipline, finishing on full stroke and over taking.

A register is maintained for every session so that we know who's where and at what stage and keeps the teachers informed of who's in their group and any medical notes on their swimmers.
National Plan for Teaching Swimming - NPTS (2008)

The Otters club has 5 swimming sections - all of which are equally important. We currently have 25  volunteers on the coaching team that enable the sections to run, a brief description of the sections is below - click on the link for more information.

We follow the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming NPTS . It is the National Syllabus produced by the National Governing Body for swimming. The plan is a multi skilled programme for swimmers to learn and be proficient in the water.

This plan not only determines the stroke skills it also teaches general water skills. There are 10 stages to the plan, but we have elected to only teach up to stage 9 as the work involved in stage 10 fits into our competition training schedule:
